Our school philosophy centers around basic beliefs about children
and learning. Children are born active and inquisitive. They learn by
reflecting on their interactions with the people and things around them.
For this process to continue children need an environment where they are
respected and trusted to make their own choices. This process of interaction
results in change and growth - both for the children and for those who live
and work with them. At Highland, students are actively involved in the events
of daily life. As equal members of a democratic community, they are able
to pursue their interests and reflect on their experiences. As a result,
living and learning at Highland gives children the opportunity to grow into
self-reliant and creative adults.
