The Highland School is an independent democratic school located in Highland, West Virginia. The School has had a rich history of hosting students from across the country and around the world. The educational process at Highland is based on the interactions of unique individuals reflecting on their experiences. Students have the opportunity to make choices, to pursue their own interests, and to participate in governing the school on an  equal basis with all other school members.

Highland was founded in 1981 by Charlotte and Steve Landvoigt. The school is located on 500 scenic acres in west-central West Virginia, which has allowed students many opportunities for exploration and investigation of the natural surroundings. Frequent trips to area cities, colleges, and cultural centers have also given our students the opportunity for a variety of experiences- such as art exhibits, live theater programs, planetarium shows, and sporting events. Long distance trips to major cities have provided additional opportunities. Finally, visiting foreign students, student exchanges with other democratic schools, and staff internships have further expanded the range of interactions and friendships available to our students.
